Masks & Equipment for the Pulcinella
of the Commedia dell'Arte
In the vast realms of Commedia dell'Arte, a figure of truly tragicomic proportions is revealed, affecting the spirits and unleashing the laughter of the masses. Hereby I present to you the later evolution, that Pulcinella, as most know him, and as he manifests himself in the artistic works of Tiepolo. Once perhaps of nobler disposition, this Pulcinella unfolds into a simple fool of endearing clumsiness. His path is determined by a troubling limitation that denies him from grasping the true splendor of life. In rare harmony with base desires, he serves only their fulfillment, surrendering himself without reservation to their baser satisfactions.
A servant of dubious intelligence, yet with tireless devotion, to serve his master and carry out his commands. Through his hunchbacked figure, he knows well the blows he has received, yet he endures them with great perseverance, as if it were the natural burden imposed upon him by fate. In his eyes flickers a spark of truthfulness, a distorted reflection of human nature that reminds us how we all grapple with the darker aspects of our existence in our innermost being. Pulcinella, the laughing mask of comedy, reveals the dilemma of human existence in all its eccentric splendor.
Thus he traverses the stages of the world, the unmistakable Pulcinella, always ready to amuse the spirits with his bumbling presence. His gait is heavy, his actions marked by absurd comedy. Yet deep within him, he carries the burden of human suffering and through his antics, he reveals to us the transience of being. In this servant, who equally makes us laugh and ponder, we find the echo of our own tragedies. Let us therefore encounter and celebrate the hunchbacked Pulcinella, for in him, we find the reflection of our own folly and the universal essence of human comedy.
